“e•qui•lib•ri•a” 2020 Visual Arts BFA Exhibition to be Presented as a Virtual Show for the First Time in the History of New World School of the Arts

The New World School of the Arts Visual Arts BFA Exhibition, EQUILIBRIA, will be presented virtually for the first time in the history of NWSA. Featuring the work of the 25 artists in the college graduating class of 2020, these exceptional and determined artists have completed their undergraduate careers during the time of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. Within one month of preparations, the students, along with their faculty and lead by NWSA Dean of Visual Arts, John Slepian, have completed a full interactive website showcasing their work, bios, statements and some even including detailed renderings of how their work might be experienced in live surroundings.
 
The NWSA Visual Arts BFA website launches on Friday, May 15 with a Zoom party to celebrate the accomplishments of the groups four year educational journey at NWSA. Thereafter, the website will be live for guests to enjoy without a closure date.

 "The students have put a tremendous amount of effort into this new way of showing their work. They have quickly adapted to this new reality and have flourished under these difficult circumstances. I’m very proud of the way they’ve come together. Many of them connected remotely to the school’s advanced computer labs, or worked with limited resources at home, to find a way to present work that was no longer accessible to them under quarantine. They worked day after day with faculty and staff to finalize this exhibition before they graduate next week,” said Dean Slepian. “It’s the first time NWSA has done an online exhibition and it’s comparable to shows designed and presented by much larger institutions. I’m sure that this is only the beginning. We will continue showcasing our students’ work in this way. Our plan is to utilize online resources to reach larger audiences, not only for the local community–who has shown great support for our live shows–but nationally and internationally. We want to reach audiences who might not have access to these incredibly talented students’ work."
 
The exhibition presents a highly diverse collection of artwork-from media installations to painting, from sculpture to animation, addressing themes ranging from the immigrant experience to pictorial abstraction, from the female gaze to the ways that technology can reveal a hidden story. Over their four years of study, each of the artists in the exhibition has found their unique balance in their practice as an artist. In EQUILIBRIA (the plural), these individual states of balance come together to create a symbiotic conversation. The newly designed website will feature their completed BFA work, documentation of work-in-progress, work done during quarantine, and virtual 3D galleries.
 
Plans are underway to mount the physical exhibition in fall 2020. More details about the onsite BFA Exhibition to be presented in Wynwood’s Moore Building will be forthcoming.
